Pirates, Saints & Traditions
A Journey Through Ikaria’s Past
Step into Ikaria’s past and uncover its rich history and enduring traditions on this immersive tour, perfect for those seeking an authentic cultural experience.
Our journey begins at the stunning Theoktisti Monastery, nestled in a tranquil forest. Together, we’ll uncover the dramatic tale of its kidnapped holy relics, admire vibrant 17th-century frescoes, and explore the hidden chapel tucked beneath a massive rock—one of Ikaria’s oldest and most iconic churches.
Next, we’ll step into a traditional Ikarian house-museum to uncover the secrets of Ikarian daily life. We’ll talk about the self-sufficient organization of the household, which reflects the minimalist mindset of the Ikarians, as well as the ingenious ways locals adapted to the constant threat of pirate invasions.
Mrs. Maria, a master of Ikarian cuisine, will greet us with freshly prepared Loukoumades and aromatic Greek coffee. You’ll have the chance to learn the art of crafting Greek coffee and explore the intriguing tradition of fortune-telling through coffee grounds.
Our journey will then take us to the 300-year-old Karimalis Farm, where we’ll discover the secrets of traditional winemaking. Together, we’ll enjoy a wine tasting session and immerse ourselves in the rich flavors of Ikarian wine.
For a more hands-on experience, you can join us for a cooking class at the farm. We’ll prepare traditional Ikarian dishes together and finish the day with a family-style lunch, enjoying the delicious food we’ve created.
